The reasons for the decrease in drainage performance in the presence of iron compounds in groundwater, which cause the drying of pipes and protective and filtering materials, are analyzed. The physicochemical process of arching on pottery and plastic pipes and the data of studies at pilot production sites of drainage in various soil and soil conditions for more than ten years of operation are presented. There are some measures that slow down the process of suffocation, in particular, the use of organic filters, including straw filters. Data are given on the decrease in the efficiency of drainage due to the accumulation of up to 50 % of the sum of all causes. The degree of risk of exposure to pH and  contents Fe²⁺ in groundwater. It is recommended to carefully study the soil and soil conditions and the content of Fe2+ in the water when surveying at sites for reconstruction in order to make an informed decision on the method of drainage or open network.
